Council steps in to ease the climb

Upper Hutt Leader - - NEWS - By COLIN WILLIAMS

The climb from Wallaceville Rd to the ridge line above Maidstone Park will soon be a bit easier.

Steps are being put in over most of the track’s several hundred metres to complete the work on the latest addition to Upper Hutt’s network of off- road walking tracks.

The Upper Hutt City Council had long held plans to connect the tracks accessed from the park or Kingsley Heights to the Mangaroa Valley.

The land for the new track was previously owned by former longserving mayor Rex Kirton.

It came into city ownership at the time of the sale of adjacent land for housing development on Wallaceville Rd.

‘‘The access there is important to the whole walking and cycling strategy for the city,’’ council infrastructure director Lachlan Wallach said.

‘‘It’s something we have been after for a while and with the change in the ownership of that land it became possible.

‘‘It’s a great outcome for the community,’’ Mr Wallach said.
