WHATAMESS WESAY:
The good news is Upper Hutt people are recycling. The bad news is they are making a real mess of it. While the first week of the city council’s free drop-off transfer station at Park St has highlighted how welcome a service it is to the community, limitations in its cardboard and paper capacity, days and hours of opening and access have been starkly evident. The resulting dumping of material - recyclable or otherwise - in huge volumes has turned the area into a rubbish dump at times. The fledgling service needs to be treated sensibly. In these early days it might not be meeting expectations but everyone needs to be responsible and play their part in making it work, long-term, for their city.
