On Sunday I was one of the more than 14,000 people who headed off for the Round the Bays event in Wellington. I wasn’t one of the elite runners who headed off early in the morning, just one of the pack of 9000 who lined up just after 9am.

The sun wasn’t shining but it was still and humid and you could feel the air of anticipation. Around me were all sorts of people including some of the 70 amazing Archilles athletes. These inspirational people from amputees to those recovering from strokes were guided around the course and I saw many as I walked my way round to Kilbirnie Park.

We were all levels of fitness but as the sun came up as we headed closer to the finish line I felt proud to be part of this iconic event. One of my friends on the walk said she could now tick it off her bucket list.

Each week for the past three months we have brought you Rachel Grunwell’s great column on building up to the event. We hope you enjoy her final one which wraps up the event. (Page 47)
