Aquatics in the spotlight
The future of Upper Hutt’s H20 Xtream aquatic centre is under the spotlight.
‘‘It’s time to take a fresh look at aquatic provision in Upper Hutt,’’ city community services director Mike Ryan says.
A $50,000 feasibility study, commissioned by the city council and managed by SGL Consultants, is under way
‘‘The options to be considered range from do-nothing through to a refurbishment and upgrade of existing facilities to design and construction of a completely new centre,’’ a council brief for the work said.
It also incudes a survey of what residents, and a wide range of sports and related groups, might want from the facility in the future.
‘‘We are directly reaching out to as many people and groups as possible on this and we have had more than 200 responses already,’’ Ryan said.
‘‘We need to look at what we have here and what might be needed and also look at the trends in aquatics both regionally and internationally.’’
SGL’s work will ‘‘review the existing and potential use of H20, identify unmet needs and prepare a long-term strategic plan’’.
A separate survey of schools in Upper Hutt ‘‘to understand how they use aquatic centres’’, is also part of the consultants’ work.
A final report will be delivered by SGL in February with the council’s response to a range of options for the future included in its Long Term Plan decision making the following month.
‘‘H20 Xtream is now over 20 years old and has maintained its position as a unique aquatics destination for youth from throughout the region,’’ Ryan’s report to the city’s services committee said.
That age along with changes to community demographics and the nature of recreation and sport mean the time is right to look at what the venue should provide in the future. ‘‘We also have to look at what developments there have been at other facilities across the region in the time we have had H20,’’ Ryan said.
The questionnaire is open to Upper Hutt residents 15 years and over.
‘‘It takes a short time and we’d like as many responses, as many people taking part, as we possibly can,’’ Ryan said.
