Love on the road to Wellington airport
Life in the suburbs isn’t always about white picket fences.
A web series from Wellington creator Laura Robinson, BURBS, looks at the city’s different suburbs and the stories that play out in day-to-day life.
Hutt actor Jonathan Morgan starred in season two of the series, opposite Conan Hayes. Their episode, called Rongotai, tells a love story set over six years as the characters travel to and from the airport.
‘‘What I liked about the character was he’s so similar to myself. For him, I got to use my own voice and normally, I have to lower it when acting. It was nice to be free and not have to worry about that,’’ Morgan said.
The gay love story was shot over one weekend in September and the final product uploaded to Youtube mid-October.
‘‘It’s really different from anything else,’’ Morgan said.
Also included in the second season of the BURBS project were Aro Valley, Happy Valley and Mount Cook.
Morgan said the series worked as an advertisement for different suburbs and people got a kick out of seeing their hometown shared on screen.
‘‘The whole world can see it,’’ Morgan said.
Creating the 15 minute Rongotai film wasn’t without its challenges, however.
The cast filmed the final scenes inside Wellington Airport and had to juggle their takes between the normal hustle and bustle of the airport.
Morgan had to work around a little kid running into shots and had to dodge suitcases on the ground as he ran through the space.
‘‘The thing is, you can’t control everything in a public space.’’
The actor grew up in Upper Hutt and said he would love to see another season of BURBS expanding out in that direction.
‘‘I think they need to branch out into the Hutt Valley. I would love to do an episode about Upper Hutt or Silverstream, around where I grew up. I’m even willing to help write it!’’
For him, Upper Hutt’s setting would make it the perfect place to film in.
‘‘The Hutt is so beautiful and you can imagine the scenery you can use in opening shots.’’
