These days it seems almost every and any cause is celebrated with a day or amonth of its own.
For example, September will be New Zealand’s first ever theatre month.
But there’s an annual celebration happening this weekend which I’m particularly looking forward to, and that’s Mother’s Day.
American Anna Jarvis is said to have founded it in 1908, with its official declaration as a calendar holiday by Woodrow Wilson in 1914.
Jarvis had the best of motives, wanting to commemorate her mother on that day by laying flowers on her grave.
But she also involved US department store Wanamakers at the time and was then surprised and angry when the day became commercialised, according to website history.com
I can see her point but gifts don’t have to be shop bought.
The main gift will always be the son or daughter you have brought into the world.
