These days it seems al­most ev­ery and any cause is cel­e­brated with a day or amonth of its own.

For ex­am­ple, Septem­ber will be New Zealand’s first ever theatre month.

But there’s an an­nual cel­e­bra­tion hap­pen­ing this week­end which I’m par­tic­u­larly look­ing for­ward to, and that’s Mother’s Day.

Amer­i­can Anna Jarvis is said to have founded it in 1908, with its of­fi­cial dec­la­ra­tion as a cal­en­dar hol­i­day by Woodrow Wil­son in 1914.

Jarvis had the best of mo­tives, want­ing to com­mem­o­rate her mother on that day by lay­ing flow­ers on her grave.

But she also in­volved US depart­ment store Wana­mak­ers at the time and was then sur­prised and an­gry when the day be­came com­mer­cialised, ac­cord­ing to web­site his­
