As the weather continues to be blustery, the winds of change may also be blowing for the health services on our island.
New Waiheke Health Trust general manager Julie Cairns wants to see a one-stop-shop medical centre where the Waiheke Health Trust and the Piritahi Hau Ora Trust work together.
And she says it’s no pipe dream.
Cairns says before she took up her new job, the two trusts had already started collaborating to develop an Urgent and After Hours service for the island.
It’s the first time the trusts and three medical centres on Waiheke have come together to work on a joint proposal for an integrated after-hours service. And it’s a great first step. Cairns believes there also needs to be community engagement to co-design a health service that better serves the island’s needs.
‘‘But I don’t know how that’s going to happen,’’ she says.
