The rental housing situation on Waiheke has changed dramatically over the past few years.

Single parents used to be able to afford to rent a whole house, but now a parent and child often live in a one room sleepout. Or families share a house with flatmates or with other families.

Sometimes I knock on the door of a dilapidated shack, thinking I must have the wrong place, no one could live there. And then an ordinary looking person opens the door.

Obviously, we’re blessed to live in paradise. But many students, families and older people struggle to survive here. And the struggle gets harder as rental prices increase massively every year.

That’s why I’ve decided to sleep rough in the Waiheke Houseathon this Saturday to raise money for Waiheke Community Housing Trust to provide affordable rental houses.

If you want to sponsor me, call into our office above the pharmacy in Oneroa or donate to the trust’s BNZ account 02 0108 0367509 000.
