Waihi Leader - - News -

Matariki Waihi has launched its new website before the 2018 celebration.

The Ma¯ori New Year is coming up next month, and Matariki Waihi is preparing for the annual celebration.

Every year hundreds of students and school staff from Waihi and surrounding areas join in the events including a hı¯koi, a community concert, a dawn viewing and traditional tapuwae tournament.

The new website aims to help students, staff or anyone else interested to learn more about Matariki traditions. Some examples of waiata (songs) used during the hı¯koi are shown as well as videos of the past celebrations.

This year’s hı¯koi and community concert have been set for:

Friday, June 15: hı¯koi from 11.30am to 1pm walking on Seddon St to the Waihi Pumphouse.

Wednesday, June 17: community celebration at Waihi College Hall from from 5 to 6.30pm. Dates for the dawn viewing and the tapuwae tournament were still to be confirmed.
