Winning streak continues for Waihi
Waihi recorded its fourth Waikato B division win in a row on Saturday with a 4-0 victory over St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton.
The majority of the match was dominated by Waihi, which showed more physicality and determination than the younger St Paul’s side. Vincent Fransham opened the scoring early with a picture-perfect free kick that curled effortlessly into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Waihi’s second goal came late in the half when Raiden Maurirere followed up a deflected shot inside the six yard box, hammering it home with authority from close range.
St Paul’s was more competitive in the second half but failed to threaten Waihi’s goal thanks to solid defending from David and Ben Grant, Caleb Kirkham and Neil Hope. Waihi’s third goal came late in the second half when Fransham delivered an inch-perfect cross to Richard James, who volleyed it home in spectacular fashion.
Moments later Ryusei Nishida showed the class that earned him man of the match when he set up an attack that put James through on goal to score his second of the match.
James beat one defender before bamboozling a second with a dramatic change of direction and slotting the ball home past St Paul’s keeper.
A well-deserved win for Waihi and one that keeps the team within touching distance of top spot on the league table.
