WAIHI GOLF

Waihi Leader - - News - By NAN HOGGARD

Members of the Waihi Golf Club should thank their lucky stars that their course is so freedraining.

In spite of 217mm of rain falling in the area over three days in the holiday weekend, there was no restriction on play, and the course was playable, with little evidence of the deluge apart from some casual water in bunkers, and here and there on the course. No women played on Saturday June 2, and there were no formal competitions scheduled for the Veterans’ section on Monday June 4.

Women’s — 18 holes

Thirty-one players turned up on Wednesday June 6 hoping to finish their golf before the predicted rain came in. Those first on the tee nearly made the grade, but 4mm of rain fell in one sudden shower accompanied by a dramatic temperature drop, and no one escaped a drenching. It was a stableford competition, and it was quite understandable that some did not finish their games for conditions were far from pleasant. Stableford results: Nan Hoggard 36 points; Mavis Bruce 34; Anke Hermannsdorfer, Kathy Ashton, Adrienne Lynch 33; Wendy Matutinovich, Sara Tomsett, Jenny Gallaugher, Dot Ramsey 32; Sheryl Rasmussen (Onewhero), Chris Mercer, Carol Leary 31; Billie-Jo Simmons, Kay Marshall 30. Soul Beauty Rooms Player of the week: Nan Hoggard.

Nine holes

It was a wet morning for Wintle Cup nett and Martha stableford competitions on Tuesday June 5, and only 17 players were prepared to brave the unpleasant conditions. They were rewarded with clearing skies, rain soon stopped, and all returned to the Clubhouse dry.

Women’s Division 1 nett: Glenn Bennett 40 ; Alison Turney 41

Division 2: Kay Lane 39; Jeanette Culton 41; Joceyln Madsen 44. Men Martha Stableford: Brian Warren 16; Peter Madsen 15; John Vautier, Brian Hunter 14.
