Waihi junior footballers received brand new balls to up their game next season.

The balls were part of a nationwide giveaway from BKT, an importer and distributor of tyres, to rural schools and sports teams.

Waihi Bridgestone Tyres, which is a BKT client put their hand up to help distribute some balls in the Waihi community.

The local footballers were given 90 balls — 40 of them going to the players, 15 distributed to daycare centres and more will soon be redistributed locally, junior coach Rudy Sas said.

Under the BKT initiative 10, 000 rugby and soccer balls have been distributed across the country with the help of local tyre centres.

Waihi Junior football has had its last outing for the season last Sunday.

The team finished with a fun session which included various activities and finished with a fun game featuring parents against the kids.

Both age groups earnt bragging rights as the youngsters beat their parents showing off what they had learnt all season.

This was followed by a barbecue provided by Ged and Belinda Burke, some sweets and a prize giving to top it all off.

The kids all received each a certificate and a brand new ball to keep up their skills over the summer for when they come back next year at the start of term two.

The balls were part of a promotion organised between the Waihi AFC Junior club and local business Waihi Bridgestone tyre centre.

Richard and I would like to thank Peter, Rhonda and Steve for making this possible, and it was a nice bonus to be able to give each of the kids their very own ball.

The club would like to thank Cory and Alton Drilling who donated a container and delivered it free of charge to Morgan Park for storing all our football equipment.

We also thank Jeannine Wiki and OceanaGold for their continued support with the club that is steadily growing and where the kids are definitely showing good improvement and really enjoying themselves. It certainly helps to have you on board.

It has been another successful year and we trust you have all enjoyed it and hope to see you all again next season.
