Dog rescued from river
A struggling dog was rescued from the clutches of the Waikato River by police who happened to be nearby on Thursday. The exhausted hound had been clawing at the cliff face, but was unable to claw itself out of the water. Senior Constable Kevin Stone and Sergeant Craig Kennedy of New Zealand Police’s Maritime Unit were assessing a Search and Rescue boat close to Hamilton’s CBD when they spotted him struggling. ‘‘On closer inspection the dog wasn’t able to get out of the water and was nearing exhaustion,’’ Kennedy said in a police statement. ‘‘When we got the boat next to him he turned to swim towards us and we retrieved him.’’ The dog has since been collected by his owners and is back home.
