Cost of funerals — why not make your own coffin

Waikato Times - - Opinion - Ron Collinson, Pirongia

I’m really disappointed with the TV adverts to take out several thousand dollars’ worth of funeral insurance.

There’s no need to. I joined the happy 40 or so men and women making their own coffins at the Hastings Coffin Club.

Make your coffin for $500, then the cost of cremation is $640. You just need two able-bodied folk to take you from the morgue to the crematorium.

Then, my daughter, in my case will, as my funeral conductor, invite all to be joyful a few days later and have a few cups of tea or a few wines to release me to the promised land.

I’m delighted my ashes will be going under our kauri and po¯ hutukawa trees.
