aipa¯ Dis­trict Coun­cil has al­lo­cated nearly $100,000 to 27 events aimed at driv­ing eco­nomic ac­tiv­ity and sup­port­ing Waipa¯’s grow­ing events rep­u­ta­tion.

Mem­bers of the Dis­trict Pro­mo­tion Fund Com­mit­tee ear­maked $97,500 in fund­ing from the Dis­trict Pro­mo­tion Fund on Wed­nes­day. Close to $239,000 was re­quested from 48 ap­pli­cants in­clud­ing from 14 new events seek­ing to be­come es­tab­lished in the dis­trict.

The largest al­lo­ca­tions went to the UCI Track Cy­cling World Cup event at the Avan­tidrome in Jan­uary 2019 and the Waka Ama sprint na­tion­als to be held at Lake Kara¯piro in Jan­uary 2019 with both events al­lo­cated $10,000 each. A fire­works fam­ily night at Lake Kara¯piro to be held in Novem­ber next year re­ceived $8000, Maadi Cup row­ing re­ceived $6000 and Bal­loons Visit Waikato was al­lo­cated $5600.

The Ki­hik­ihi In­ter­na­tional Horse Trial, NZ Polo In­ter­na­tional Day and Piron­gia Craft Day each re­ceived $5000 each. The Com­mit­tee held $2500 over for ad hoc re­quests.

The Dis­trict Pro­mo­tion Fund has sat at $100,000 for a num­ber of years but was in­creased dur­ing the re­cent 10-Year Plan process. From 2018/19, Coun­cil has bud­geted $150,000 each year to sup­port key events in the dis­trict. A new $30,000 Com­mu­nity Fund was also es­tab­lished to sup­port smaller scale events which build and cel­e­brate com­mu­nity pride.

Pro­mo­tion Fund Com­mit­tee mem­bers are Mayor Jim Mylchreest, Coun­cil­lors Claire St Pierre, Su­san O’Re­gan, Sue Mil­ner and Liz Stol­wyk plus com­mu­nity rep­re­sen­ta­tives Mervyn Gyde and Kevin Burgess.
