Masterton NZ’s most beautiful city?

Wairarapa News - - FRONT PAGE -

Keep New Zealand Beautiful released their finalists for the Most Beautiful Awards last week and the inclusion of Masterton in the Most Beautiful Cities category generated a tidal wave of comment online.

Unfortunately for Masterton, most of it was not complimentary toward Wairarapa’s biggest town.

To give the council credit, they put in a great application which included a video which puts a compelling case forward for why Masterton is a great place to live with lots of beautiful places.

Here are some of the response on Neighbourly, the Wairarapa News Facebook page and Stuff:

As a local I think Masterton is in desperate need of a huge update/makeover. I amsurprised to see that it is in the running for most beautiful city.’’

Smith - Tania

‘‘I was born in Masterton & though it saddens me to say it’s anything but beautiful. Feels like nothing much has changed in 50 years apart from too many young folk with nothing to do.

Maybe I’m being unfair but there’s work to be done before it can claim that title. In general the Wairarapa is a beautiful area, lots to offer.’’

- Liz Price

‘‘Couldn’t really agree with the beautiful tag. Too much money being wasted on some wages and personal monuments. Main town area in bad need of a makeover.’’

Phil and Theresa Robertson -

‘‘Living in London, and having grown up in Masterton for some of my life, I’m good with this.’’

- Geoff Walker

‘‘If Feilding was a previous winner then maybe my hometown has got the goods. The most beautiful of our town are the people. Our community is beautiful and that’s a fact!’’

- Maxine Hemi

‘‘I suspect that the biggest problem Masterton has is that the people who live there don’t realise how lucky they are.’’

- Ricky Rogers

‘‘Greytown, Martinborough, Riversdale, Castlepoint. Four of the prettiest parts of the Wairarapa area.

It would be wonderful if the townships of Masterton, Featherston and Carterton joined in, but at the moment they’re more like farm-centric villages and haven’t really tried to make themselves attractive.’’

- JWC1

‘‘ I lived in Masterton for a very long time and have many happy memories. But beautiful? Not really. I live in Tauranga now and the harbour and ocean views are exceptionally beautiful.’’

- Beryl Thomson

‘‘Good god! ‘‘Most beautiful city’’?? Have all the other cities in NZ been blown up and Masterton is the only one left? Have you even BEEN there?!’’

- Julia Peters

‘‘It’s only a large town by kiwi standards, but I loved living on the west side of Masterton, Perry St.

Ahuriri (Napier) has a nice waterfront, but the shops didn’t look that great, I can’t speak for Tauranga, never been there. I agree with earlier comment about stopping discharge of sewerage into Ruamahanga.

I still love Whakaoriori, our iwi have been there for many many hundreds of years.’’
