A quick ring aroundWairarapa cafes revealed fairly low prices for the humble cheese scone. Two of the three sold for $3.50, although one cafe owner did point to rising prices in the industry as reasons for a possible price hike. Cafe Strada, $3.50 Cheese scones were a solid seller at Masterton’s Cafe Strada. Staff were aware of High Tide Cafe’s $5.50 scones, and a spokeswoman said while Strada’s scones were smaller, $5.50 was still a bit much. Wild Oats Cafe, $3.50 Like Strada, this prominent Carterton Cafe also sells $3.50 cheese scones. $5.50 for a scone? Too much, said employee Shane Quirke. The Village Cafe, $4.50 Though the Martinborough cafe doesn’t sell plain cheese scones, owner Bruce Laurence said its herb and cheese variety was "very popular" at $4.50. Unlike others, though, he didn’t have a problem with a $5.50 price tag, saying it was something he could consider. "It’s not just cheese and butter that’s gone up [in price], everything has," he said.
