Dixons dig deep for super spuds
The Dixon family of Oamaru proved their potato growing skills during a grow a potato in a tyre competition recently.
Kirsten Dixon and her family won a number of prizes in Tyreland Oamaru’s Tattie Tournament.
Schools and individual groups were invited to enter a potato grown in a tyre for judging.
There were a number of prizes up for grabs including heaviest potato.
Two-year-old Louisa had the heaviest potato, weighing in at around 300 grams. The family also won the best online entry.
Mum Kirsten was very impressed with the competition.
‘‘I thought that the team there did a wonderful job of encouraging kids to get growing and finding a use for discarded tyres,’’ she said.
‘‘Our family came away with some wonderful prizes including a new set of tyres, Paper Plus vouchers and a Nancy’s Lingerie voucher.’’
Growing and growing: Alex, 5, Louisa, 2, and Joshua Dixon, 4, working on their ‘‘Potato in a Tyre’’ entries at their home.
