Dixons dig deep for su­per spuds

The Dixon fam­ily of Oa­maru proved their potato grow­ing skills dur­ing a grow a potato in a tyre com­pe­ti­tion re­cently.

Kirsten Dixon and her fam­ily won a num­ber of prizes in Tyre­land Oa­maru’s Tat­tie Tour­na­ment.

Schools and in­di­vid­ual groups were in­vited to en­ter a potato grown in a tyre for judg­ing.

There were a num­ber of prizes up for grabs in­clud­ing heav­i­est potato.

Two-year-old Louisa had the heav­i­est potato, weigh­ing in at around 300 grams. The fam­ily also won the best on­line en­try.

Mum Kirsten was very im­pressed with the com­pe­ti­tion.

‘‘I thought that the team there did a won­der­ful job of en­cour­ag­ing kids to get grow­ing and find­ing a use for dis­carded tyres,’’ she said.

‘‘Our fam­ily came away with some won­der­ful prizes in­clud­ing a new set of tyres, Pa­per Plus vouch­ers and a Nancy’s Lin­gerie voucher.’’
