Get the plumbing right first time

When building, renovating, making alterations or just doing some maintenance, chances are that somewhere along the line some plumbing will need to be done.

While a handyman could be tempted to run some drainage or fix that toilet once and for all, the consequences of the job being done incorrectly could be hugely expensive, extremely inconvenient, and in some cases more than a little unpleasant.

Flooding, water damage, subsidence, and ground and structural collapse are just some of the potential outcomes from plumbing gone wrong and there is also a huge safety aspect involved – we can all imagine the potentially lethal outcome if gas lines and connections are not fitted properly.

Before you decide to tackle a plumbing job yourself (no matter how small the job may seem), it would be wise to consider the potential fallout if anything goes wrong.

Even your home insurance can be affected. If you have attempted a job yourself that should have been completed by a registered plumber and your actions are the cause or contributed to damage or loss of property, or worse, you may also find yourself in court.

Once you have made the decision to hire a professional, you then need to look for a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer. As with all trades, there are those who are qualified and registered and those who are not. With so much at stake you need to take your time and choose wisely.
