FROM THE NEWS DESK
As you will see on the front page the brave Jess Purdue has shared her story about her past boyfriend taking his life seven years ago.
She also shared that in eight years 12 people she has known have died from suicide.
That is simply too heart wrenching to hear.
To put suicide on a national scale in perspective, at the bottom of the South Island and the top of the North, there is 579 pairs of empty shoes to represent the amount of suicides in 2016.
It’s so easy to feel disconnected from something so horrific when we are presented with a number, but seeing all of those empty shoes should hit home for a lot of us.
Most of us will be directly or in-directly affected by someone who has taken their life. I don’t have an answer other than be kind to one another. Tell your friends and family you love them and are thinking about them.
Sometimes all it takes is picking up the phone or sending a text. It might not mean much to you but it might mean the world to them.
