New Zealand Walk: New track links Wairarapa with the Manawatu

For many years there has been a de­sire to open up a track link­ing Wairarapa on the east coast of the North Is­land through the Tararua Ranges to Manawatu on the west coast. Now it has been done. The track is some 25 kms south of the ex­ist­ing Manawatu Gorge

It is some years since the Wed­nes­day Wilder­ness Wan­der­ers a group within the Manawatu Tramp­ing and Ski Club have made a cross­ing of the ranges and the first time that the group has made a cross­ing so close to Palmer­ston North.

For some time a group of vol­un­teers led by the in­domitable Ian Ar­gyle, have been work­ing on a track link­ing NaeNae Road, an un­sealed road reached from the Tu­taekara Road in the Wairarapa, with the re­cently opened Otan­gane (Nip­ple)
