Fabrics with a nostalgic feel make a welcome addition to weekend dressing this summer; soft-to-touch linen, retrovelour and prints reminiscent of homes on the prairie (hello gingham and patchwork) are all part of a no-fuss approach to dressing for those requiring more than gym clothes for the weekend. Loose, carefree dresses make a great starting point here, with several designers including throw-on-and-go dresses, tunics and smocks to encourage an easiness that will carry you through the day. And while some designers try to scrimp and save on costs by omitting lining in their garments, others see the value in a second layer — handy particularly in the height of summer when clothes require some support. The Jude dress by Twenty-seven Names is one such garment, lined with breathable 100 per cent cotton calico, adding the right amount of weight to this smock-style dress, teamed easily with a pair of canvas sneakers or your favourite summer mules.

Widdess 10 per cent cotton voile top $229. Zambesi satin PJ pants $380. Zelda Murray pearl and bead earrings, $240, from Penny Sage.
