The Glitterati

Weekend Herald - Canvas - - CONTENTS - Dan Ahwa

Maybe it’s the popularity of the mobile app Kirakira that has designers thinking of all things shiny. The app has been popular at recent spring 2018 shows as front-row attendees shared photos with an additional sparkle filter courtesy of the app. Judging by the abundance of sequins and glitter on display for next season, there’s no doubt the trend will continue to resonate even further in 2018 (and is perfect inspiration for New Year’s Eve events). But how do you wear glitz in summer? It’s an opportunity to pair a sequinned top with jeans, a perfect example of high-low dressing that feels right for summer parties. Sequinned slip dresses with trainers or a special pair of earrings with a classic T-shirt is another way of nailing casual glamour. Light-reflecting and iridescent sequins are a surefire way to turn heads, the memo here being to avoid wearing such pieces only on special occasions but to wear them as daywear. Life’s too short to save clothes for special occasions, and these days, that says a lot about how we’ve come a long way, using clothes to stay upbeat in the face of trying times.
