Great expectations

How to nail new season event dressing. Combine English eccentricity with a dash of Sloaney drama. Mix well.

Weekend Herald - Canvas - - CONTENTS - Dan Ahwa

As if plucked straight out of Miss Havisham’s closet, delicate and languid, slightly campy separates make a convincing case for romantic nostalgia this season. Faded elegance and a sort of hand-medown eccentricity found in lace and velvet, mixed with botanical prints, fluttering day dresses and estate-inspired costume jewels create the perfect balance of decadence for all those special trans-seasonal occasions. As temperatures gradually begin to cool, it’s an opportunity to add a few more interesting layers into the mix — think sheer tights (or ones in a print or lace if you’re feeling adventurous) or special cardigans that segue easily into after-five activities. It’s aristocratic ladies with a wicked streak — Luisa Casati, Daisy Fellowes and Princess Margaret conjure up plenty of inspiration; their irreverent view on traditional dressing and elegance made heads turns as they combined whimsy and drama into one knockout look. It’s a measured approach to event dressing that will see you through the height of winter.
