Two gris and a noir

Today I am judging Fashion in the Field at the Hawke’s Bay Spring Racing Carnival. Scary. I’m far more comfortable judging flash wine than frocks and fascinators …

INVIVO MICHELLE’S CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2017 $40

Named after winemaker Rob Cameron’s lovely mother, this is a richly structured, spicy-but-nicey pinot noir that really sticks its head above the rest. Huge cherry and tamarillo flavours, warming (it is 14.5 per cent alcohol) and incredibly textural. It’s bold, racy and robust like you wouldn’t believe. Tiny amounts are made of this wine only when the fruit is perfect — so enjoy it while you can. Sip with: duck pancakes invivowines.com

EIGHT RANGES CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT GRIS 2017 $27

Bright and glossy in the glass and scented with subtle pear and apple characters, this is a pearler of a pinot gris. Made by the legendary Matt Connell (of Akarua and Matt Connell Wines fame), it’s chock-full of fresh and frisky fruit, crisp acidity, and tautness of texture. So frolicsome and flavoursome, it’ll bring you back to life if you’re feeling a tad listless and have you challenging the kids to handstand contests in no time. Sip with: anything figgy. eightranges.co.nz

ASH RIDGE ESTATE HAWKE’S BAY PINOT GRIS 2017 $21

While I’ve been a huge fan of Ash Ridge’s big, bold reds and darn stylish chardonnays since the get-go, as soon as I sipped their shiny new pinot gris I was like, “Where have you been all my life?” Delicately scented with classic white peach, poached quince and pear, the palate is boosted by those iron-rich, red gravels of the Bridge Pa Triangle that injects richness, tongue-tingling textures and a long, nashi-like note on the finish. Sip with: butter chicken? Boom! ashridgewines.co.nz
