SAINT CLAIR ORIGIN MARLBOROUGH GRUNER VELTLINER 2017 $21
Some days drag on longer than Steven Joyce’s fiscal hole headlines. So if you need to be perked up and punched back into life — a fleshy, fruity and fabulously floral wine like this will do that nicely. Scented with summer flowers, lemon zest and almond, as well as crushed seashells, it’s a fresh, frisky white wine to perfectly pair with daylight saving. Sip with: the salty crackling and juicy, herb-infused flesh of Tuscan roasted pork belly. saintclair.co.nz
TINPOT HUT MCKEE VINEYARD MARLBOROUGH GRUNER VELTLINER 2015 $25.50
Holy oyster shells and almonds, Batman! This gruner is grown by the McKee family of Blind River in the Awatere Valley who are friends and neighbours of winemaker Fiona Turner. With its incredibly precise floral, saline and nutty top notes and layers of herbs and white peach, the signature grape of Austria is clearly making a happy home here. This seriously stylish wine just sings. Sip with: lemon and fennel chicken meatballs. tinpothut.co.nz
STEININGER KAMPTAL RESERVE GRUNER VELTLINER GRAND GRU 2015 $45
Steininger are part of a “gang” of 23 producers in Austria known as the “Osterreich” and I love their “Grand Gru” classification as a cheeky pun on the term grand cru. Located in Langenlois, deep in the beautiful, prestigious Kamptal Valley, Steininger’s vines have produced a racy, rip-the-buttons-off-yourcardigan, organically-grown classic, with apple, elderflower, soft tarragon and fennel flavours. Plus there’s a twang of spice and gorgeous, chalky tannins. Drool-inducingly good. Sip with: pork schnitzel and apple salad.
