“Oh my God, Mum, guess who Isaac’s talk­ing to,” said my daugh­ter, 8 or 9 at the time, of her twin brother. We were in a su­per­mar­ket, and Isaac had in­tro­duced him­self to John Campbell, broad­caster, in the pro­duce aisle. By the time I got there, they were dis­cussing, en­thu­si­as­ti­cally, foot­ball, to a back­drop of many va­ri­eties of ap­ples and citrus and the chaos of the Satur­day shop. There aren’t many broad­cast­ers who man­age to be at once fully recog­nis­able and gra­ciously en­gag­ing. I am sure this story is not unique.
