This is Fifa's second- biggest tournament, with many future stars in the international spotlight. First played as the Fifa World Youth Championships in Tunisia in 1977 with 16 teams, now the 20th edition in South Korea has 24 teams ( since 1997). The first 19 tournaments produced nine different winners headed by Argentina ( six), Brazil ( five), and Portugal and Serbia ( once as Yugoslavia) with two. Serbia won two years ago when New Zealand successfully hosted for the first time. The last five tournaments have produced five different winners. The last four finals have gone to extra time, with two decided on penalties. New Zealand have played four of the last five and line up for the fifth time here. Their best effort came two years ago in reaching the second round. Australia have been to 15 tournaments, twice losing the bronze match. Spain have also played 15 times. Only Brazil, with 18 out of 20, have made the cut more times. Vietnam and Vanuatu debut this time, with Vietnam joining New Zealand, France and Honduras in Group E. New Zealand first play on Monday ( v Vietnam 10.48pm).
Serbia won the last Fifa Under- 20 World Cup in New Zealand two years ago, beating Brazil in the final.
