This is Fifa's sec­ond- big­gest tour­na­ment, with many fu­ture stars in the in­ter­na­tional spotlight. First played as the Fifa World Youth Cham­pi­onships in Tu­nisia in 1977 with 16 teams, now the 20th edi­tion in South Korea has 24 teams ( since 1997). The first 19 tour­na­ments pro­duced nine dif­fer­ent win­ners headed by Ar­gentina ( six), Brazil ( five), and Por­tu­gal and Ser­bia ( once as Yu­goslavia) with two. Ser­bia won two years ago when New Zealand suc­cess­fully hosted for the first time. The last five tour­na­ments have pro­duced five dif­fer­ent win­ners. The last four fi­nals have gone to ex­tra time, with two de­cided on penal­ties. New Zealand have played four of the last five and line up for the fifth time here. Their best ef­fort came two years ago in reach­ing the sec­ond round. Aus­tralia have been to 15 tour­na­ments, twice los­ing the bronze match. Spain have also played 15 times. Only Brazil, with 18 out of 20, have made the cut more times. Viet­nam and Van­u­atu de­but this time, with Viet­nam join­ing New Zealand, France and Hon­duras in Group E. New Zealand first play on Mon­day ( v Viet­nam 10.48pm).
