Devlin rocks

Weekend Herald - - Your Sporting Weekend -

This columnist has been a long-time fan of Martin

Devlin — since 1977 when we crossed paths at St Patrick’s College Silverstream. A fleet-footed Devlin was an attacking forward in our much-maligned football team for which this columnist was a goalkeeper. Football was not big at a Catholic boarding school in the late 1970s — in fact, there were no actual football fields at the school, only rugby fields. The young Devlin back then was a cheeky, highenergy, quick-witted string bean . . . so nothing has changed in 40 years. Except Devlin has taken his knowledge, passion and skill to the pinnacle of radio sports broadcasting in this country, hosting the afternoon slot on Newstalk ZB, starting today at noon. I wish him every success — on top of Thursday night’s success when he was named sports broadcaster of the year at the annual Radio Awards.
