Marseilles ‘home’ for Europa final
The second tier Europe League final pits two powerhouse nations against each other as Dimitri Payet and Marseille chase history when they front Spanish giant Atletico Madrid. Without doing anything, Marseille have some sort of home advantage, with the final being hosted at Lyon's Parc Olympique, which won hosting rights in December 2016. That gives the French club something in their favour as they chase their first success after two failed appearances in the final (in
1999 and 2004). No French club has won the competition. On the other hand, Spain has had 10 wins (and been five-time runners-up) with Atletico winning their only two finals (in 2010 and 2012). To reach the decider Marseille, who entered the third qualifying round, have played 18 games (lost four) whereas Atletico came in at the knockout phase, played eight games losing one and drawing one. Europa League, Thursday 6am.
Dimitri Payet came back to Marseilles from West Ham as part of the club’s revitalisation project under Amierican owner Frank McCourt.
