Bennett climbs into top 10
George Bennett underwent his first real test at the Giro d’Italia cycle classic yesterday and passed with flying colours. The Kiwi climber finished fourth on stage six, a result which lifted him into ninth place on the overall general classification. The result also doubles as a positive sign of his chances for the slew of mountaintop finishes later in the race, after he showed no signs of weakness on the first real climb — up Mt Etna. Bennett was stronger than many prerace favourites, shining brighter than Chris Froome, Tom Dumoulin, Fabio Aru and Miguel Angel Lopez. Esteban Chaves won the stage from teammate Simon Yates, who moved into the leader’s pink jersey while announcing himself as a serious contender for the overall title. Bennett is 1m 11s down on Yates.
