Grrl power fears

Weekend Herald - - Your Sporting Weekend -

Judging by the reaction of some deluded souls you’d think Australian cricket was going down the dunny faster than an All Blacks loss at Steve Hansen’s house (if that’s not too mixed a metaphor?). The “problem” is that Fox Sports has announced 10 women – including

Jessica Yates and Ian Healy’s niece Alyssa – among its 31-strong cricket commentary team which will be headed by Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne. Yes, 10 women out of team 31 (many of them the blokiest of blokes) for a 24-hour channel that will broadcast virtually piece of cricket in Australia, from tests to the Big Bash League and a raft of women’s contests as well as magazine shows. Channel Seven had previously named four women in a 15-strong team after securing the free-to-air rights for men’s tests and one-dayers. It’s not exactly end of days, you’d think – but comments from some blokes on the interweb suggested it was worse than a cold pie, warm beer combo. “I’m getting sick of this woman power stuff,” said Kevin, who seemed stuck in 1868. “10 women seems rather excessive,” added Ian, while Paul thought it was a “farce” and that “political correctness will destroy public interest in the sport.” Wait until this lot get a female prime minister.
