Why aren’t all fur babies created equal?

This week’s story about a proposed dog ban from sensitive ecological areas in Te Atatu brings the age old argument, cats versus dogs, roaring back into focus.

Banning dogs being walked on a lead but leaving cats, those most efficient killers, free to roam doesn’t make much sense.

If we are really trying to protect the bird life in the beautiful Te Atatu Peninsula I would suggest a cat ban might be more effective.

We make owners of dangerous dogs muzzle their pets in public, yet cats’ plunder our precious bird life with nary a bell in sight.

If cat owners want their dear fur child to roam free - and I am not at all sure they should be allowed - the very least they can do is stick a jangly bell around its neck.

For full disclosure I don’t own a cat or a dog and do not identify as a cat or a dog person, although I like them both.
