Consistency breeds results as Bears nab trophy
The Roope Rooster Challenge Trophy has a new home out west.
The Glenora Bears worked their way to a 28-20 win over the previously unbeaten Pt Chevalier side on May 16 to claim the historic cup.
Glenora are rolling now with three wins in a row, they remain fourth in the Fox Memorial Championship, they sit tied equal on 10 points with Mt Albert.
Glenora head coach Bernie Perenara said it took a complete performance from his side to go into enemy territory and come away with the silverware, but knows there were still things to work on.
‘‘The boys gave an 80 minute performance and they’ve been rewarded with the Roope Rooster for it,’’ he said. ‘‘But, it’s still early days. We’re happy with our results these past couple of weeks, but there’s always room for improvement.’’
Perenara said it was good to see where his side were at, especially against competition favourites like Mt Albert and Pt Chevalier. The Roope Rooster goes on the line at every home game of the trophy holders. And so Glenora don’t have a lot of time to celebrate.
Their first defence of the trophy will be this weekend when they host Richmond – Perenara’s former club – at Harold Moody Reserve on May 27.
Kickoff is at 2.30pm.
