FROM THE EDITOR

Western Leader - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Heard of Peter Haynes?

Me neither until recently, when the current chairman of the Albert-Eden Local Board announced $6000 of ratepayer cash was going towards a community news site because suburban newspapers are ‘‘withering away’’.

Really? This paper has about 90,000 readers a week. Our stories published online draw hundreds of thousands of readers. Just one of our many videos we posted to social media recently was seen by just short of the 10,000 people who voted for Haynes in the 2016 local body election.

We now broadcast all west local board meetings on our Facebook page, with the latest seen by about 1500 people in a few hours.

Unlike what is proposed for Albert-Eden, we do this for the princely sum of nothing. Our newspaper and popular online editions are also, that beautiful word, free. Unlike Mr Haynes, whose salary also costs ratepayers. I know what I think is the better deal.
