FROM THE EDITOR

Western Leader - - YOUR PAPER, YOUR PLACE -

Well I guess people do read my editorials!

I wrote last week about AlbertEden Local Board’s decision to plow $6000 into a community news site. I got a fair bit of flak for not knowing who Peter Haynes, the chairman of the local bard, was.

But I think my original point stands. I do not believe this is good value for ratepayers. Do we not already bankroll Auckland Council’s site, Shape Auckland and its publication, pay for numerous communications staff and each council-controlled organisation also seems to have a platoon of public relations staff?

So why do we ratepayers need to pay for this too? Not every perceived problem needs a few grand chucked at it. I want to see councillors and local boards come up with solutions that don’t cost me money.

People around this city, who pay rates, are in real need. Six grand for a news site is the last thing I want to see your money be spent on. What do you think?
