There is a new venue for the Books and Writ­ers Week­end from Septem­ber 8-10. The week­end, which is part of the Go­ing West Books and Writ­ers Fes­ti­val, will now be held at the Civic Build­ing at 6 Henderson Val­ley Rd, Henderson. Fire dam­age to the Ti­ti­rangi War Me­mo­rial Hall prompted the change.


West Auck­land res­i­dent Har­mony Court is the first fe­male to win the Master Elec­tri­cian’s Chal­lenge – a tough trades con­test for trainees. Court said it was her prepa­ra­tion that helped her to win the chal­lenge. Court is do­ing her ap­pren­tice­ship with The Elec­tri­cal Train­ing Com­pany and is work­ing with Leck Elec­tri­cal. She is due to qual­ify as an elec­tri­cian next year.


The West City Con­cert Band won the gold award and first in the com­pet­i­tive sec­tor at the New Zealand Con­cert Band As­so­ci­a­tion Fes­ti­val on Au­gust 3-5. The West City Sax­o­phone Quar­tet won the tro­phy for the best small en­sem­ble and West City Youth Band won a Sil­ver Award at the Whangarei event.


Peter Gup­till – a Sub­urbs New Lynn cricket stal­wart – died on Au­gust 27, af­ter a bat­tle with cancer.
