Thieves target tourists
Thieves are preying on day-trippers travelling to stunning native Auckland bush.
Police had received reports of vehicle break-ins at walking track car parks in the Waita¯ kere Ranges, West Auckland.
Senior Sergeant Richard Thompson said the Fairy Falls Track car park on Scenic Drive had been targeted by thieves several times over the past two weeks.
‘‘We have seen a trend of breakins in the area. Opportunistic thieves have taken advantage of people leaving belongings in vehicles in car parks and not taking them with them.’’ Thieves were also targeting another entrance to the falls walk on Mountain Rd and multiple car parks along Scenic Drive, he said.
Police said unattended cars and campervan windows were smashed and bags and valuables taken.
There was also a worry for visitors to the walking tracks that weren’t local and unaware of theft danger. ‘‘If you’re in the area make sure they are aware of the risk and take their valuables with them.’’ Thompson said police would increase its patrolling of the ranges to deter such crime.
The sergeant advised vehicles should always be locked and free of any valuables. If you notice any suspicious activity call 111.
