We chat to the pregnant star about her new‘ baby’
To say it’s been a big year for Miriama McDowell would be an understatement. The 37-year-old starred in Find
Mea Maori Bride, then wrote WEARE and directed her own play at Auckland’s FAMILY! sell-out Pop-up Globe. And as if that wasn’t enough, she did it all while pregnant with her second child.
“It’s been an amazing year where everything’s just fallen into place,” smiles the former
Broken wood Mysteries star. Now the talented actress is returning to the stage to act in the upcoming production K or ora reka: The Ball ad of Maggie Flynn.
The play, which is travelling across the North Island this month, features a cast of five women and tells a story of New Zealand’s colonial history. For Miriama, this means she gets to tackle a variety of characters, from a Scottish sailor to a prostitute with a speech impediment. “I’m actually playing more men than women in this show, which is quite funny considering I’m pregnant!” laughs Miriama, who is already mother to five-year-old Talanoa.
The actress admits that being a mother and managing her career does require a bit of juggling. She tells us, “I do have a sleeping nest in the corner of the rehearsal room where I go for little naps.”
Although Miriama is looking forward to a break from acting when the new baby arrives, it’s clear this won’t be the last we’ll see of this super-mum. “I’ve had to say no to things because of my pregnancy, but I will say I’ve got some secret projects coming up!”
The actress brings a variety of colourful characters to life.
