Q My neighbour’s cat keeps pooing in our garden. How can I get it to stay out of my flowerbeds? It makes the garden absolutely stink and I am sick of it.

● Green Fingers, Taupo A Oh, Lordy, I understand your pain. There are various schools of thought – and I do not promote or endorse any of them – however, over the years, these tactics have been used by friends and lovers: a) Catch the cat and spray it with a cold hose during an act of dumpage; b) Spray an antipet defecating spray daily on your garden; c) Speak to neighbours – my least favourite option; d) Combine A and C; e) Ask the vet; f) Do all of the above! Q I am a senior citizen and find that a lot of the time I am alone. My husband died a few years ago and so have all my good friends. I have acquaintances at the church shop where I volunteer, but how can I forge new friendships without feeling awkward? I feel so lonely.

● Feeling My Age, Hamilton A There are gyms for seniors and you could also contact Aged Care as they have lots of contacts for groups that may be of interest to you. Also, your local council will guide you to groups in your suburb that often do pick-ups and drop-offs. You don’t need to be lonely, my lovely. There are lots of people out there who want to meet you!
