Is there a way to slow down the growth of a hedge so it doesn’t need cutting back?

Woman’s Day (NZ) - - Gardening -

If your hedge is low, every time you walk past it, just run your hands all over it as this will lightly damage all the ends of the stems and the plant will be forced to redirect its energy from growing into repairing that minor damage. If your hedge is big – well, that’s a lot of stroking!
