As she prepared for the title role in the new Sabrina theTeenageWitch

reboot, KKiernan Shipka was hardly enenchanted by the original ’990s series. “I knew the basics of the show, but I never wwatched,” the Mad Men actractress confesses. “I was scareds it would mess mme up if I did.” Kiernan’s Kiern co-star Ross Lynch – who plays her love

interest Harvey – found it outdated. “It was before my time!” laughs the Disney alum. “Funnily enough, when I booked the show, my mum started watching the original. I told her, ‘Mum, you realise this has nothing to do with that, right?’” Putting a spell on Woman’s

Day, Kiernan and Ross tell us more about the new story.

How is this series different fromtheoriginal?

Kiernan: This Sabrina is really dark. As far as character, she’s super-passionate about doing the right thing. She’s powerful but hasn’t fully come into her powers yet. She’s still growing and figuring it out.

Ross: People are expecting the sitcom version. I’m excited more than anything to shock

people with the darkness of the show! Are Sabrina and Harvey still thesameloved-upteens, though?

Kiernan: Sabrina’s relationship with Harvey is so beautiful and pure. They really, really adore each other.

Ross: They’re still young, so that innocence of first love is apparent. It’s electric. He

knows she’s very spspecial. Special like a witch?

Ross: I don’t think he’d assume that she has powers or that she’s a literal witch!

Kiernan: The thing that kills Sabrina is that she is hiding part of herself from Harvey. Watching that unravel throughout the season is one of my favourite parts of the show!
