“The absolute height of private villa, private island luxury travel anywhere in the world.” So said one satisfied American guest after a stay at Laucala Island Resort earlier this year. Laucala is owned by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, who has spared no expense to make this “private island refuge” very exclusive indeed. The resort itself occupies 450 hectares on the north coast of the tiny (12sq km) island east of Taveuni. Elsewhere on Laucala are green volcanic peaks, rainforest and coconut plantations, with gardens and a small farm supplying the resort with fresh meat (including Wagyu), organic produce and flowers. White sand beaches bleed into the turquoise waters of the surrounding lagoon.
