A multiple tourism award winner over a number of years, Taveuni Palms is one of several resorts on Taveuni, Fiji’s third-largest island 6km east of Vanua Levu. A fabulous reef that’s home to almost 400 species of colourful coral and 1,500 types of fish has made Taveuni famous among divers and snorkellers, but the lush “Garden Island” itself is pretty wonderful too, with volcanic peaks, bushwalks and waterfalls and prolific bird life. If exclusivity is your thing, Taveuni Palms has it in spades. Its three two-bedroom villas are each surrounded by a acre or more of private gardens, with a private beach and personal swimming pool. A staff of seven services each villa, on call to answer a guest’s every need – including providing superb food and wine – without intruding on their privacy. From the seaside Beach Villa to the elevated Horizon Spa and Grand villas with their sensational views, all come with every modern amenity, including a full entertainment centre and library, an ipod loaded with music, an ipad and unlimited complimentary Wi-fi. Décor is muted, in elegant soft creams and white. There are polished wooded floors and Italian tiles, king beds, beautiful bathrooms and outdoor showers, daybeds, hammocks, lofted ceilings and water hyacinth furniture. Champagne awaits guests on arrival, there’s complimentary all-day room service, and all meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included in the tariff. For those who can drag themselves away from the lounger beside the private pool, the activities menu is long and varied: snorkelling and scuba diving (naturally), kayaking, day sails, kiteboarding, paddleboarding, stargazing, rainforest hikes and waterfalls, deep-sea fishing, birdwatching, surfing, island-hopping… or you could just order up a massage on your private deck.
