JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU RESORT

World - - CONTENTS -

Named for the French oceanographer and son of Jacques, the John-michel Cousteau Resort is the perfect place to learn to dive or for snorkelling around the coral reef. Experienced divers can explore the brilliant submarine life at 13 dive sites in and around Savusavu Bay. The resort’s dive operation, L’aventure Jean-michel Cousteau, offers Padi-certified diving courses and packages, a full-service dive shop with gear to rent or buy, and trips accompanied by a resident marine biologist. But diving and snorkelling are not the only attractions of this family-friendly resort at the southern end of Vanua Levu. With 25 bures and suites amid 7ha of coconut palms and gardens and surrounded by white-sand beaches, it’s five-star Fiji with as much action or relaxation as you can take. On-water activities include kayaking, paddleboats, glass-bottom boat rides and sailing on the resort’s catamaran. On land there are nature hikes, mangrove tours, reef walks, rainforest and waterfall hikes and traditional medicine walks, visits to nearby Nukubalavu village or Savusavu farmers’ market. There’s a kids’ club and swimming pools (one with a slide), tennis, volleyball, mountain bikes, trampoline, board games and video room – and, by the bar, an adults-only oceanfront “Serenity Pool” flanked by day beds. The beachfront spa, meanwhile, specialises in Fijian-inspired treatments. There are earlymorning yoga sessions and, at night, stargazing or perhaps a kava ceremony. This year, resort owners Canyon Equity announced the completion of sweeping multi-million-dollar refurbishments and the introduction of new Deluxe Oceanfront two-bedroom bures “to provide more flexibility and privacy for two couples or families to share accommodation, with private entrances and separate ensuite facilities”. Chef Raymond Lee presides over the open-air restaurant, which is strong on locally caught fish and seafood in a menu that changes daily. Resort rates include all meals, non-alcoholic drinks and transfers from and to Savusavu airport.
