ON SCREEN Erect a screen of non-flammable materials, such as galvanised reinforcing steel, in front of the pipes, water heater and breather vent. Use the same type of screen for a bin storage area behind carport.

CLIMB HIGH Plant a scented climber and train it along the screen.

LAYER UP Plant low, clumping plants and ferns in small groups of 3-5 around the courtyard to add another planting layer. Choose a maximum of 3 species.

PATHWAYS Build a path of large bluestone stepping stones and pebbles through the centre of the courtyard to connect doors to new path along fence. Square, round or rectangular pavers could also be used.

WELL CONTAINED Choose some oriental-style containers and plant with bonsai, bamboo or dwarf trees as features for vertical contrast. Add a Japanese-style water bowl, Zen sculpture or similar decorative object to suit the theme.

ALL-DAY COVERAGE Plant groundcovers around the edges of the courtyard. Plant at least 2 for variety.
