They admitted themselves that “she’s not flash this week”, before receiving their first loss. Ling and Zing’s hallway and guest bedroom were designed during ‘blank canvas week’ to a selfproclaimed brief of “calming, neutral and skux”. ‘Skux’ (a slang word for ‘stud’ or ‘cool’) was defined by the tongue-in-cheek pair as “a Scandinavian industrial feel”.
Unfortunately, the look was a little too simple for the judges, who called out the lack of finishing and dysfunctional storage. The brothers remade the room in ‘do-over week’ and received another loss – their only change had been to remove the headboard which had been blocking the light switch. While their score may not have been flash, the pair were playing the long game by designing an extra bedroom, Zing says. “We changed the layout of the house to be able to do this, as the biggest selling point, in our opinion, is to have more bedrooms.” But they admit it’s probably the worst work they have done on the show. “We like it,” Ling says, “but it’s pretty minimal.”
