Pensioners lament non inclusion in confab

Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Ahmed Mohammed, Bauchi

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) has lamented their exclusion by the Federal Government in the on-going national conference.

National president of NUP, Dr A.O Afolayan, who was represented by North-east chairman of the union, Alhaji Muhammed Inuwa Ahmed, at the press conference in Bauchi yesterday said all efforts by the union to send delegates to the conference failed.

“Government collected names of six persons; one from each political zone as representative of the union but none of them was included in the list. If government fails to respond to our demand, the union would mobilize its over five million members nationwide to protest,” he said.

He added that if all efforts fail, they will involve the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the matter.

“Government should be told that pensioners in Nigeria, who are about five million form a large voting block and to neglect us is not in the best interest of either the federal or state governments’’, the union said.
