NEWSBYTES 50 friends of the chairman
It is clear now that the 491 delegates at the National Conference have conceded to the chairman to select his friends. In the first week, during deliberations, some delegates accused Justice Idris Kutigi of calling on only delegates whose faces he recognised.
But when the three quarters/ two thirds controversy erupted, the chairman single-handedly picked his 50 “wise men” from among the delegates. A frontline lawyer-activist had to question the wisdom of the chairman’s action.
It is clear now that after the 50 “wise men”, now called “chairman’s friends”, saved the conference by breaking the voting modality stalemate, they have now been endorsed by other delegates.
While they are called chairman’s friends, the chairman called them “conference friends.”
Surprisingly, the same activist-lawyer who earlier opposed the selection of the 50 “wise men” has now turned round to praise the chairman for work done by his “few friends.”
