Daily Trust - - NEWS - From Nabob Ogbonna, Abakaliki

Three primary school children yesterday drowned in the Ebia River in Egugwu Agbaja, Abakaliki LGA of Ebonyi State. Kingsley Nwenyi (12), Obinna Nwenyi (6) and Somtochukwu Ogbonna (11) drowned when they went to swim in the river after school. They lived in the same compound at N0. 19 Ikechukwu Ogbaga Street. Two were from the same mother said to be a widow while the third was the landlord’s child.

Two other kids who went with them to the river refused to swim along. They raised the alarm that attracted neighbours who tried in vain to rescue the children. The father of Somtochukwu, Mr. Samuel Ogbonna, told Daily Trust that his death was devastating as he was his last born.

Our correspondent gathered that incidences of drowning in the particular river have become a yearly occurrence with the highest number so far recorded this year. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Chris Anyanwu when contacted said he was yet to receive details though he heard of it.
